Home Study

Individuals wishing to adopt must be approved by a home study agency to do so. This process is done by a social worker that gathers documents from you, interviews you, comes into your home, and provides you with information concerning adoption.

Documents

There are many documents that must be gathered during the home study process. To name a few:

References
Application for homestudy services
Physical Reports for each person residing in the home
Autobiographical statements of the adoptive parents
Criminal Record/Clearance
Child Abuse Registry Clearance
Financial Statements

Interview Process

There will be interviews with you and your spouse together, and one on one interviews alone, as well as speaking to any other children residing in the home. The social workers should discuss the referral process of a child and the emotional issues of losing a referral if an biological parent decides to come back and parent a child or a citizen of the child's country decides to adopt the child themselves. Citizens and biological family members can interrupt the adoption process until finalization overseas. The Social Worker should prepare the families regarding loss issues associated with losing a referral and seeking a new referral. The Social worker should cover how you intend to provide childcare for your child if applicable. Issues surrounding a new family member joining your family should be discussed as well. A good social worker will become a close friend throughout and after your adoption process. They are on your side, they want these children placed in loving homes as much as you want a child placed in your home. They must cover all of these areas in order to write an acceptable home study for a foreign country. Be yourself. be honest.

The homestudy will include a walk-through of your house. Your social worker will be looking at the child’s room and sleeping arrangements and for running water and reasonable cleanliness of the home. Be relaxed and enjoy the excitement of the process. Your social worker will not look in your closets, drawers, attic, basement, or garage.

Autobiographical Statement

You and your spouse will each have to write or express your autobiography information. Your homestudy agency will give you an outline to follow. This will cover just about every aspect of your life, and how you feel about a lot of things. Write in your own style, but remember why you are writing it. People want to know what kind of parent you are going to be.

Below are some questions that may be asked in your autobiography

Where did you grow up?
Who raised you?
If you were married before, describe this marriage.
What kind of relationship do you have with your family, siblings, etc.
What is your educational history?
How do you plan to parent your child?
What do you consider your greatest success? And failure? How did you handle it?
What do you do for a living?
How do you intend to handle cultural or ethnic differences?
