Sponsor an Orphan from Sierra Leone
The orphans of Sierra Leone have witnessed atrocities that no child should ever have to see. War has torn this country apart, leaving in its wake many orphans and few resources.
The primary state orphanage was burned to the ground by rebel troops. Many of the orphans were abducted by rebels or simply shot in the street. Those that were left are living in extremely deplorable conditions. |
Since the orphanage was destroyed, most of these children are now living in foster homes or on the streets. These orphans lack proper sanitation, food, potable water, medical care and clothing. Many of those on the street have been sold into the sex trade. Orphan girls between the ages of 13 and 18 are particularly vulnerable to this form of abuse.
Some of the children are fortunate enough to receive basic education. The educational system in Sierra Leone is poor and many children are left out. Groups such as RCSL help provide education and offer a few of the older children professional training, such as tailoring, hair-dressing and cosmetology, soap and die making, carpentry, etc. This is the only chance they have of becoming independent.
Many children go without any help at all. Services are limited considering the seemingly intractable problems facing these children and the meager resources available to humanitarian aide groups. Orphans have very few options to survive, and very few are able given the resources to become useful citizens. |
