Orphans of Ukraine
Ukraine is open to US adoptions.
In 2003, Ukraine was the 6th largest country for international adoptions to the U.S. (source: Adoptive Families magazine).
In 2001, the INS issued approximately 1,250 immigrant visas to Ukrainian children, making it the 5th largest country for international adoption by Americans (source: Children’s House International). |

Children available for adoption include boys and girls (usually, the waiting period for adopting a girl is longer) aged 12 months and older, sibling groups, and children with special needs.
Couples wishing to adopt a Ukrainian child must complete a home study course, INS paperwork, a dossier, along with other forms. Most agencies require couples to be over 25 years of age.
Travel required: Yes. One trip, duration varies between 2 to 4 weeks. Both parents are required to make the trip but one parent may return home early after the court appearance. The adoption is finalized in Ukraine.

Singles accepted: Yes.
Other: One of the initial steps to a Ukrainian adoption is submission of a dossier. It is sent for pre-approval to the National Adoption Center (NAC), which is the only legal Ukrainian authority for adoptions. If accepted, the NAC issues an invitation to the prospective parents to travel to Ukraine. After arrival in Ukraine, you will meet with the NAC and be provided with referrals of available children.
